I've heard it, read about it and now experienced it... That "one" fare...
No not a great story or adventure but a long haul, a money maker! Started the car at 7:30, wiped it down, stocked the waters and turned on Uber - instantly a hit for Fraternity row - "Great, another DTF ride..." Nope... this dude came out with a suitcase and I smiled, we're heading to the Airport!
He rode in the passenger seat which is nice, and Yes, we were off to LAX... The conversation was centered around his "coming out" recently, his Mom's reaction and how this trip was a birthday gift to himself to get away from the intolerance he was feeling... Some of it was difficult for me to understand why people were surprised, but I guess when you come out you probably act differently from that point forward... The dude was super cool none the less and it was a quick ride - 45min - poor guy's flight wasn't until midnight and I dropped him curbside at 8:15pm...
I keep $5 starbucks cards in the car for milestone riders - like 100th fare, first ride out of state, etc... I figured first LAX passenger was worthy so after grabbing his suitcase for him I gave him one - his reaction was priceless and he had one of the safety coordinators snap a photo of us in front of the car - wish I had done the same but hopefully he'll send it to me and I'll post it up!
So I was back in my home area about 9:15ish so 1.5 hours of driving - the fare? $57 Had I decided to turn on Lyft while at LAX I may have grabbed an OC based rider, OR I may have been headed to Woodland Hills, I killed the apps and drove home offline not willing to take the chance... So that trip, on my calculations of a 45 minute drive brought in $1.27/minute or $76/hour, that's more than I make on Double Overtime!!!
I'm now a fan of Airport rides after rush hour!!! I took Friday off of my primary job to get used to Airport driving, pretty sure I'll be driving more for Lyft that day as they can pickup anywhere, Uber is limited to SNA (John Wayne) and is saturated from what I hear...
Here's to a single fare night! Salud!
Jeff
